At SBG our fighters know what it means to put everything on the line for a fight, and this year for Breast Cancer Awareness Month they will be using those skills to #chokeoutcancer.
Beginning September 1st and continuing through the month of October, SBG athletes across the world will sport pink belts specially made by Fuji to support the fight against breast cancer.
The fundraiser will run through the month of October, and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to breast cancer research and prevention, giving patients a fighting chance in the battles they wage against the toughest fight of their lives.
Those less familiar with the fighting realm sometimes have this perception that when a fighter goes into battle that somehow the victor is going to come out on top and the score’s going to be 10-0. But in a real life fight, that is never the case. The score is closer to 9 to 8. You win some and lose some, and when you come out, you’re scarred.
With cancer, it’s no different. It may be in remission, but you come out literally scarred. Chances are your financial situation has taken a huge hit, and maybe you don’t get to go back to work. You get chemo brain, where you wake up on days and don’t feel like yourself. You are never the same person that you were before.
As a fighter, what makes you victorious is not whether you come out of the battle unscathed. It’s about how much you’re willing to give everything you have no matter what advantage an opponent has over you. You fight without hesitation and despite any fear. The stakes are high and the outcome far too important to give it anything less than everything you have to give. You leave nothing on the mat.
Head Coach Kisa Davison shared, “You fight like that – all out, no limits – and you are willing to put EVERYTHING on the line because it’s worth it. When the outcome matters, it’s worth giving up all you have to win. Any less effort is acceptable only when the stakes aren’t as high. “
SBG gyms have rallied their members when it comes to local causes, but no battle this significant can be fought without your tribe behind you. That is why SBG gyms across the globe are getting behind this fundraising effort, making SBG the first BJJ organization to raise money for a cause on this scale.
Whether a UFC champion or an everyday athlete, SBG fighters know that it’s not whether you fall down but how you get back up.
The proceeds raised in this fundraiser will help those affected by cancer to stand back up tall and victorious.
